You rock as always! I’ll keep you posted on my speaker invitation for Tuesday night on collectivism, socialism and communism in the new VA “social studies skills” standards of learning- kindergarten civics? “Sharing for the collective well being of others”. NO LIE.
I am a high defiant nonconformist. My whole life I was ODD before conformity was the new APA way for children to be mentally stable - but ODD with an iq of 158 made for.....Well... Very frustrated AP calc teachers in HS. My senior year my physics teacher Dr. Rodemacher- everyone knew he was a hard ass, but he embraced my extrovert meets high intelligence and taught me how to be brilliant and defiant in my pursuit of truth and cultivated my love of problem solving. I think about what public education would do to me now. How dumbed down would i be ? because at age 7 they would’ve looked at my emotional quotient and known “we will never be able to mold her into a thoughtless cog or drone” -
The good news? Most of the RSP teachers can't do anything with a kid because they're so inundated with paperwork. The bad news? There are almost no Dr. Rodemachers anymore.
Thank you! Very solid list. Is there a reason for only the first of the Narnia chronicles?
Also, I’ve been compiling a book list of children’s novels that deal with life under communism. Let me know if you’re interested in exploring these titles. I was inspired to do after realizing how very little I ever learned about this in my education. I’m finding some very edifying reads for middle-high school.
The next list for 8-12ish is coming. Pinky promise. ;)
Then 13-17. The lists aren't perfect, but I think they're a good place for a family to start. Even if you have older kids, I'd bet a lot of them haven't read the stories on the 3-7 list -- and they need to if they want to take a real education.
I read the Velveteen Rabbit last night with my daughter and got choked up. I knew I would. She let me cuddle her pink bunny. It's magic. I have to get into the chapter books with my boys. It's the best part of every day.
My kids LOVE the Velveteen Rabbit, and like you, I also get choked up by the end. I read it in my childhood and also saw the VHS story narrated by Meryl Streep. I wish I could find that VHS to put into our digital library.
I love how classical literature opens up this new fantastical world where you can believe in the magic of the story and it becomes true.

This is a brilliant list! Eagerly awaiting the one for older kids, too. Thank you.
Getting after that one tonight. Might take a bit longer, but should have it out by the end of the weekend. <3
Also, who's ODD do you think is worse: mine or yours? ;). Or are you more on the "intentional non-learner" side of the defiance spectrum?
It's an ODD-off! I had a therapist tell me I have oppositional defiance...it's a badge I wear with honor. Game meets game!

Thank you for these wonderful lists and tips for getting the most out of these books. I'm excited to delve in and try some of these with my kiddos.

Even if you never leave home, stories open the world to you. Great people like Emily Dickinson are built on a solid stone foundation of great stories.
